A brief history of our operation
~ by Carl Figgins

I bought my first combines in 1975. I had been going on the harvest run for many years prior to that, starting when I was in high school. I devote most of my time and energy into this business to make it a success. I run three to four 9650 STS John Deere combines, four to five grain hauling trucks, adding pup trailers in the irrigated wheat in western Kansas and in the fall harvest, a tractor and grain cart, one service and fuel trunk stocked with necessary repairs and maintenance equipment, two pickups and a suburban. Everything is equipped with two-way radios. We pull trailer houses for housing everyone. One of them is a cook trailer, office and central point for communications with farmers, elevators, fuel stations, parts stores and whatever else comes with running this business. All the harvest information for the customers is on a computer. We start our harvest run in north central Texas usually the middle of May, moving onto western Kansas then to Colorado and onto the golden triangle of Montana, cutting wheat, barley and oats. Then we travel back to western Kansas for the fall harvest of corn, milo, sunflowers and popcorn. We usually get back to our home base of Mankato, KS by the middle of November. We have been doing this for more than 30 years. We have one daughter, Jennifer, who started going with us when she was only two weeks old. She graduated in December 2000 from Kansas State University with a B.S. in Agriculture and is now married, living and working in Salina, Kansas.

We like to treat our employees as family. We work hard as a team and we play together with fun and laughter. We run a clean and efficient operation. We provide a service that is needed for farmers at a crucial time for them. Crops are only profitable when they are in the elevator or the bin. The farmer and the custom harvester work hand-in-hand to grow and supply the food needed by America and the rest of the world. We are proud members of the U.S. Custom Harvesters, Inc along with our friends and harvesting partners from Skinner Harvesting.
